چکیده

Full waveform inversion (FWI) is a process in which seismic data in time or frequency domain is fit by changing the velocity of the media under investigation. The problem is non-linear, and therefore optimization techniques have been used to find a geological solution to the problem. The main problem in fitting the data is the lack of low spatial frequencies. This deficiency often leads to a local minimum and to non-geologic solutions. In this work we explore how to obtain low frequency information for FWI. Our approach involves augmenting FWI with travel time tomography, which has low-frequency features. By jointly inverting these two problems we enrich FWI with information that can replace low frequency data. In addition, we use high order regularization in a preliminary inversion stage to prevent high frequency features from polluting our model in the initial stages of the reconstruction. This regularization also promote the low-frequencies non-dominant modes that exist in the FWI sensitivity. By applying a smoothly regularized joint inversion we are able to obtain a smooth model than can later be used to recover a good approximation for the true model. A second contribution of this paper involves the acceleration of the main computational bottleneck in FWI–the solution of the Helmholtz equation. We show that the solution time can be significantly reduced by solving the equation for multiple right hand sides using block multigrid preconditioned Krylov methods.

GPR Full Waveform Sensitivity Analysis using a FDTD Adjoint Method

Coarse structures involving low electrical contrasts can be profitably imaged by means of cheap and relatively simple methods such as travel time tomography, whereas fine structure involving sub-wavelength detail can only be recovered by inverting full-waveform data. Despite its complexity and high computation costs, full-waveform inversion of GPR data has become a popular tool for high-resolut...

Discretized Adjoint State Time and Frequency Domain Full Waveform Inversion: A Comparative Study

This study derives the discretized adjoint states full waveform inversion (FWI) in both time and frequency domains based on the Lagrange multiplier method. To achieve this, we applied adjoint state inversion on the discretized wave equation in both time domain and frequency domain. Besides, in this article, we introduce reliability tests to show that the inversion is performing as it should be ...

An integrated inversion of seismic refraction and reflection data using combined wave-equation tomography and full waveform inversion

We have developed an integrated method to obtain highresolution subsurface elastic parameters using combined wave equation tomography (WET) and full waveform inversion (FWI). Both refraction and reflection data are used. During parameterization, long wavelength and short wavelength structures are separated and mapped into velocity and density to account for kinematics and dynamics, respectively...

Tomography without Rays

We present two new techniques for the inversion of first-arrival times to estimate velocity structure. These travel-time inversion techniques are unique in that they do not require the calculation of ray paths. First-arrival times are calculated using a finite-difference scheme that iteratively solves the eikonal equations for the position of the wavefront. The first inversion technique is a di...

Seismic tomography using travel-time surfaces for experiments in the laboratory

Abstract In this paper, seismic tomography using travel-time surfaces was performed for synthetic sediment samples in the laboratory. Travel-time surfaces were used for visualization of the data as well as for quality control. Tomographic experiments were first conducted on numerical test data and then on observed data recorded in the laboratory. For the observed data, the construction of trave...
